Navigating the Future of Network Planning: A Snapshot of Global Aviation in 2023
10 Dec 2024
Highlights:
The rise of regional connectivity, route reactivations, and the strategic importance of flexibility highlight new directions in airline network planning.
In the dynamic aviation landscape of 2023, network planning was more complex than ever, reflecting shifts in passenger demand and the critical need for adaptability. Airlines are developing route networks that cater increasingly to regional connectivity while balancing operational efficiency and evolving passenger expectations. This year saw a remarkable 67,000 scheduled routes worldwide, demonstrating the industry's resilience and adaptability in response to shifting global travel patterns.

One of the most notable aspects of this landscape is the emergence of new routes. Around 4,200 of these scheduled routes—or 6% of the current network—were completely new, having not been flown between 2014 and 2022. These additions underscore airlines' need to adapt quickly to evolving market demands. Notably, 81% of these new routes serve regional travel within specific areas, with domestic connectivity showing particularly strong growth. The U.S. led this trend with 619 new routes, followed by China with 514, and India with 175, reflecting a clear demand for accessible, intra-region air travel.
The pandemic also left a lasting mark on route availability, and 2023 saw the revival of 5,200 previously suspended routes, about 8% of the network. Many of these routes, grounded during the height of COVID-19, are being reintroduced as airlines regain confidence and travelers return to the skies. The Asia-Pacific region leads this recovery, with 11% of its network comprising reactivated routes, signaling a significant return to pre-pandemic operations.
The Asia-Pacific region also reflects the year’s highest percentage of route expansion, with 82% of routes remaining consistent from 2022. Yet, as much as 7% of the region’s routes are entirely new. Similar patterns were seen in the Middle East and Africa, underscoring the growing demand for expanded access across these fast-growing travel hubs.
Meanwhile, Europe and the Americas have seen steadier expansion in their network structures. Each region has seen approximately 6% of new routes in 2023, reflecting a more moderate pace of development, in contrast to the rapid growth of intra-regional routes observed elsewhere.
This trend toward greater regional connectivity and the reintroduction of key routes highlights how critical strategic network planning has become.
